Drawings: OCR Configuration Tips

Tips and tricks to configure OCR on drawing sets for improved accuracy.

Written by JD Williams

Overview

When uploading a drawing set, the system runs Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to extract sheet numbers and titles from each page. During the OCR Review step, you select the region of each page where the sheet number and title appear. Following the tips below will help the OCR engine read your drawings more accurately.

Tips for accurate OCR

  • Use a consistent template across pages. The biggest issue users run into is when the drawing template shifts position from page to page. For accurate OCR reading, the template should sit in the same location on every page.

  • Don't include label text in your selection. When selecting the OCR region, do not highlight the labels "Sheet No." or "Sheet Title." The OCR engine will read these labels and include them in the extracted sheet number or title.

  • Select the largest possible area. Sheet titles can vary in length — some are one line, others span multiple lines. To capture even the longest titles, select an area large enough to fit your longest expected title.

  • Zoom in on small selection areas. When you need precision, use Ctrl + scroll wheel to zoom into the drawing.

  • Avoid spaces in page numbers. Page numbers with spaces are flagged as invalid. For example, A101 is valid, but A 101 is not.
