How to connect INGENIOUS MCP to your AI tool

A step-by-step walkthrough for connecting your INGENIOUS.BUILD account to AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and other MCP-compatible assistants. Covers prerequisites, setup, authentication, and what to do once you’re connected.

Written by Cara Alva

Overview

INGENIOUS MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a connector that lets your AI tools securely access your live INGENIOUS project data. Once connected, you can ask any AI tool questions about your projects in plain language and get answers backed by your actual workspace data.

No more switching tabs, exporting reports, or copying data between systems. Connect once, ask anything, work faster across pre-con to closeout.

Prerequisites

  • An Enterprise INGENIOUS.BUILD account

  • An AI tool that supports MCP connectors (Claude Desktop, Claude.ai, ChatGPT Pro, or other MCP-compatible assistants)

  • You may need to be the account owner or an account administrator to add a custom connector depending on your AI platform

  • Your INGENIOUS MCP server URL: https://mcp.ingenious.build/mcp

Process

1. Open your AI tool’s connector or integrations settings

Find the area in your AI platform where external tools, connectors, integrations, or MCP servers are managed.

Examples:

  • In Claude: Customize → Connectors

  • In ChatGPT: Settings → Connectors (if available on your plan)

  • In other AI tools: look for Integrations, Tools, MCP, or Developer Settings

Then:

  • Choose the option to add a new connector, integration, or MCP server

  • Select Custom Connector, Custom MCP Server, or similar

2. Add the INGENIOUS MCP server

  • Paste your INGENIOUS MCP server URL into the server or connector URL field

  • Name the connector — we recommend INGENIOUS.BUILD so it’s easy to recognize

  • Save or add the connector

Note: Some AI platforms require Enterprise or admin permissions to add custom connectors or MCP servers. If you don’t see the option, contact your workspace administrator.

3. Authenticate with INGENIOUS

After adding the connector, you’ll be redirected to the INGENIOUS sign-in page.

  • Enter your INGENIOUS workspace credentials

  • Sign in to your workspace as normal

4. Authorize access

  • Select the workspace you want to connect (if applicable)

  • Click Authorize Access to grant the AI tool permission to query your project data

Once authorization is complete, the connector will appear as active and ready to use.

5. Verify the connection

Try asking your AI tool a project-related question to confirm the connection is working.

Example prompts:

  • “Which RFIs on my active projects are aging over 7 days?”

  • “What’s my budget burn on the Madison project this month?”

  • “Show me overdue submittals across active projects.”

6. Your ready to have your AI interact with Ingenious!

You should now be able to use Prompt based and Agentic feature of your AI tool either within INGENIOUS or based on data in yoru INGENIOUS workspace.

  • Check out our prompt library to help you get your familiar

  • To see all available information and functions, open your AI Tools custom connector and go to the Information section, where data is labeled as READ (view or retrieve data) or WRITE (create, update, or modify data).

Frequently asked questions

Is my INGENIOUS data stored by the AI tool?

  • No. INGENIOUS MCP only sends data to the AI tool when you ask a question. Nothing is stored outside your INGENIOUS workspace, and the connection respects your existing workspace permissions.

Can I connect to more than one AI tool?

  • Yes. The same INGENIOUS MCP server URL works across all MCP-compatible AI tools. Repeat the setup steps in each tool you want to connect.

I have multiple workspaces — how does that work?

  • During the authorization step, you’ll be prompted to select which workspace to connect. You can connect additional workspaces by repeating the setup process and choosing a different workspace each time.

How do I disconnect or revoke access?

  • Open the connector settings in your AI tool, find INGENIOUS.BUILD in the list, and select Remove (or the equivalent option). Access is revoked immediately — the AI tool will no longer be able to query your project data until you reconnect.

What can information or functions are currently available?

  • To see all available information and functions, open your AI Tools custom connector and go to the Information section, where data is labeled as READ (view or retrieve data) or WRITE (create, update, or modify data).

Summary

You only need to set up the INGENIOUS MCP connection once per AI tool. Once connected, your AI assistant can pull live data from your INGENIOUS workspace anytime you ask a question — no exports, no switching tabs, no manual copy-paste. The connection stays active until you revoke it.
